What is Art Brut?

“Works executed by persons unharmed by artistic culture, in which mimesis, in contrast to what happens in the case of intellectuals, has little or no part at all. Consequently, the authors draw their inspiration (themes,  materials, the means of transposition, rytm different styles of willing, etc.) from their resources and not from the clichés of classical or fashionable art.” (Jean Dubuffet)

“We are witnessing the quite pure, raw artistic operation, reinvented in full all its phases by his author, from only its own impulses. The art is therefore the place where shows itself the only function of the invention, and not those, constants in the cultural art, of the chameleon and of the monkey.”

“The productions of all kinds-drawings, paintings, embroideries, modeled figures or sculptures, etc. – of spontaneous character and strongly inventive, owning as little as possible to habitual art and whose authors are obscure people, unscathed by the official artistic culture.”

“Works executed by authors that are humble people who ignore the intellectuals circles, often unharmed by artistic education and to whom the invention practices, therefore, but that no incidence comes there to alter the spontaneity.”

„In parallel to the official art, based on the principles of the Academy inherited from the Italian Renaissance, a self-taught creation exists for a long time in West. For along time ignored, it at the present Lakes the way of recognition. Dubuffet in 1945, defines the “Works executed by persons unharmed by artistic culture.”
